When Jesse was on book leave last year, I remember thinking, Wouldn’t it be funny if I wrote a book while he’s gone? Well, I did not write a book while he was on leave but I did write one a few months later and it is now available for pre-order.
This is not, I am sorry to report, a book about furries, ABDLs, daisy chains, knitting groups, or anarchist cafes, but I hope it will be of some interest to our listeners anyway. It’s about a safe, cheap, effective, and readily available treatment for alcohol use disorder that does not require abstinence and yet is almost unheard of within the general public. It’s also about the history and science of addiction treatment, why abstinence-based methods don't work for everyone, and it’s about my own story, both the funny parts (there are plenty) and the embarrassing ones (there are even more).
I’ll be honest: I really did not (and do not) want to talk publicly about this part of my life. As pervasive as addiction is, it still feels shameful, and so opening up about my own struggles felt very scary during the writing process and feels even scarier as the publication date gets closer. But it was also necessary. Alcohol addiction is prison, and keeping a potential key to get out of that prison to myself felt even worse.
Pre-orders are a huge deal, especially for first-time authors, so if you struggle with alcohol, or love someone who does, or just want to help me sell more books than Jesse, you can pre-order my book here. And thank you, truly.
Drink Your Way Sober sounds like the name of a Troy McClure infomercial. I love it!
After I listened to the reflector episode I was kinda slack jawed, I wish there was something like this when I quit years ago.
Like you I loved it,but knew it had to end.
Mine ended with total psychological and emotional collapse. So yeah, I’m gonna read this puppy. Thanks for enduring the sharing part, I know it’s gross and such.
